Anthony Alexander JARRETT.

b. 13 Aug 1968 Enfield, London. Coached by Mike McFarlane.
Although generally overshadowed by Colin Jackson, Jarrett has compiled a most distinguished record, ranking in the world's top 10 each year 1988-98, with major titles coming with the World Cup in 1994 and Commonwealth Games 1998 (after silver in 1990 and 1994) and a lot of silver and bronze medals, with several further medals at the sprint relay for Britain. Before that he was English Schools 110mH champion in 1986 and won double gold at the 1987 European Junior Championships, when he became the third British athlete to win a major junior title at 110m hurdles in successive seasons. He lined up beside the other two, Colin Jackson and Jon Ridgeon, in the Olympic final in 1988 and was 6th. He set four English records at 110mH from 1990 to the 13.00 that he ran when taking the World silver medal in 1993. In 1999 he had a season's best of 13.22 for 110mH, but had to miss the AAAs and the World Championships through injury.

His 60m hurdles best of 7.42 is now equal tenth on the world all-time list and his 110mH best of 13.00 ranks seventh outdoors. In 2000 he set an English indoor record of 6.51 for 50m hurdles and at the European Indoors he took his season's best down to 7.61 in the semi and 7.53 in the final, as he won the silver medal ten years on from doing so previously and marked his return to world class. He then beat Colin Jackson, for the first time ever at 60mh indoors, at the CGU International in 7.58. Outdoors he took his seventh AAA second place at 110m and had a season's best of 13.53. His 13.89 in his Olympic heat was below par, but would have qualified him for the second round except that he was then disqualified for running out of his lane.

After seven second places at the AAA Championships from 1988, he at last won the 110m hurdles title in 2001, but was disqualified for two false starts in his semi-final at the World Championships, and in 2002 after fourth at the Commonwealth Games, thus just missing a fourth successive medal at the event, he was disqualified after taking 4th in his semi at the European Championships for touching the last hurdle in the lane to his left.
