Report
Twenty-one Enfield & Haringey AC sprinters reached the Finals of the 100 metres races at the Middlesex track championships last weekend. Of these, eleven came away with medals - four of them gold. It was a similar story in the 200 metres where sixteen E&H athletes won through to the finals of the longer sprint to gain eleven medals with, again, four golds for Enfield.

Three Enfield & Haringey sprinters did a Kelly Holmes by getting onto the gold standard twice. In the Girls Under-15 age group on Sunday, Phillippa Tappin dominated all her races for decisive victories recorded at 12.5 and 26.4 seconds. Saturday had seen Andre Laidley contending with strong winds when taking the Under-17 Finals in 11.7 and 23.1 seconds. Christal Robinson also bucked the breezes for her two W20 golds, achieved in 12.5 and 27.4 seconds; Phillippa Tappin's older sister Lia was second (12.9) in the 100m race.

Winner of the Boys U13 100m, Nat Dorsett (13.1) took an emphatic second gold in the long jump with his 4.20 leap. Second in that competition with 3.91m was the B13 1500m winner Kevin Stewart. Kevin sprinted into the lead of the metric mile from the gun and appeared to sustain his pace for the whole distance to take the B13 title in a personal best time of 4:52.5 which was also a championship best performance.

Nat Dorsett's sister Torema (13.0) took second in the W17 100m with clubmate Ruth-Ann Watson (13.7) in 5th place but the tables were turned in the 200m. Ruth-Ann stormed to a remarkable victory - considering her short sprint time - in 25.2 with Torema third, timed at 26.1 seconds.

Enfield & Haringey AC had three other gold medallists in the W20 age group. Margaret Akot cleared her customary 1.50m to take the high jump; Yemi Bello had a windy 4.99m leap to win the long jump from Lucy Paterson (4.92) who also grabbed a silver in the 80m hurdles; and Shadein Mars threw the javelin 28.19 metres to win that event.

In the male senior ranks, Joel Hopkins recorded 55.7 seconds for a win in the 400m hurdles while Christian Small took the 110m high hurdles in 17.2. Five E&H seniors progressed through the heats to the 100m Final where Gavin Eastman (10.8) went bronze. Again there was a reversal of fortunes in the longer sprint; Keith Marle could only manage 8th (11.4) in the 100m but ran 22.5 round the bend for the 200m silver medal.

Going down the age groups, Luke Fagan won his M20 200m heat in 22.5 but, experiencing a niggle, did not contest the final where David Telfer (100m 3rd in 11.3) was second with 22.2 and Kelvin Wilson third in 22.8. Over two metres already this season, James Luck found 1.90m sufficient to win the M20 High Jump.

In the M17 events Aaron James (14.6) pipped Shafiur Choudhury (14.8) for the 100m hurdles title while E&H achieved another golden double in the heavy thows where Jamaroo Nooks hurled his 5kg hammer out to 54.57 metres and planted the shot at 11.95m - Danny Farenden taking second in the hammer with his 46.70m throw.

Emma Shuker - 13 last November - showed maturity, strength and speed in the G15 1500m where she held off two rivals round the final bend and sprinted away down the straight for a personal best of 5:12.2 and a well taken county title. Earlier Carolina Blane-Hernandez had run away from the field in the G13 1500m for an impressive PB of 5:22.3. Vanessa Stewart was second in the G15 javelin, thowing the spear 16.82m

Nana Yeboah came away from the B15 sprints with a 100m silver (12.1) and a 200m bronze which he achieved with a 25.0 half lap after running 24.9 in the heats. Desola Bakre won silver in the G15 long jump (4.76m) and then took a bronze (26.9) behind Phillippa Tappin in the 200m.

In the final accounting Enfield & Haringey AC won 21 golds, 13 silvers and 10 bronze medals. However, many other Enfield competitors at the New River Stadium just failed to medal. Worthy of mention is Eileen Griffith who ran her fastest 3000m for 4th place in the senior championships. GH
